NEIGHBORHOOD MURALS 2017– SAN FRANCISCO: ITS HISTORY AND ITS DIVERSITY

Six new murals, begun in Hemlock Alley between Polk and Larkin earlier this year,

have been completed. They were officially unveiled on September 6.

The six murals were done by the following artists: Dray, Ali Futrell, Will Durkee and Marcus Lee, Marina Perez-Wong and Elaine Chu and Mel Waters, Yukako Ezoe and Naoki Onodera.

SHAMELESS PLUG

I know him mainly as the brother of the owner of a restaurant/bar I frequent who sometimes serves me drinks.

What I didn't know is that he is also a filmmaker whose movie 'Resistance Is Life' was an offiicial selection of SF DocFest, among others.

Subtitled, “How Could We Live Without a Homeland” , it tells the story of Evlin, “an 8-year old girl who escaped with her family from their village in Kobane, Syria in September 2014” fleeing from ISIS.

It screens at the Roxie Theater this Sunday, June 11 at 9:30 p.m. And again on Monday, June 12 at 7:15 p.m.

NEIGHBORHOOD MURALS 2016 – TODAY WAS A GOOD DAY (#6 in a series)

At first, the message on this mural in Olive Alley seems out of place in its Tenderloin surroundings until you realize it's actually one of two murals

painted on the walls of City Hope Community Center at 45 Olive. It was created by local wall artists 1 AM.

CITY MURALS – SELF-DESTRUCTION (#6 in a series)

This mural is painted on the side of 222 Hyde Street. I see it whenever I ride the 19 Polk outbound. It's also visible from the 31 Balboa and anyone driving out Turk Street toward Van Ness and the ocean.

It's one of my favorites in the city because it's so raw and expressive.

Painted in February 2013 by New York artists How and Nosm,

“...Self Destruction is a three-story narrative of lives like that of Calvin Gary, a longtime street-seller at Hyde and Turk streets who, breaking from his salesmanship, looked at Self Destruction and told me he thought How and Nosm were "damn good artists." Gary's glowing critique is a tribute to the way that How and Nosm portray tumult....”

CITY MURALS I LIKE – LORD NYCHOS THE WEIRD AND ABREXER (#4 in a series)

Appearing a few weeks ago, these two murals, one by Lord Nychos the Weird

and the other, by the artist Apexer

have already become popular with the public.

You can view them across from the San Francisco Public Library at the parking lot of 37 Grove.

NEIGHBORHOOD MURALS – SOUTH WALL, MITCHELL BROS. THEATER (#15 in a series)

A spectacular new mural has appeared on the southern wall of the Mitchell Bros. Theater at O’Farrell & Polk. (This is one of those times I wish I was a much better photographer.)

The mural is the work of John Vochatzner, the night manager of the O'Farrell Theater. He was helped in this endeavor by D Young V, also a street artist.

The next time you're in the area of Geary and Polk, take a quick one-block detour and check out a striking addition to San Francisco murals.

NEIGHBORHOOD MURALS (#7 in a series)

This mural isn’t in my neighborhood, but when I saw it, I knew I had to feature it. It’s located on the wall of the Hotel Potter at 1288 Mission and 9^th St. My only regret is I wasn't able to photograph it without the shadow.
