JUMP BIKES ON POLK STREET

JUMP Bikes, a dockless electric bikeshare company, has placed at least two electric bicycles on Polk Street between Pine and California.

Anyone can rent them and return them to the nearest utility pole or bike station.

NEIGHBORHOOD OPENINGS 2017 (#13 in a series) – WHIL CONCEPTS

I'm not sure how long Whil Concepts has occupied the old Bank of America space on 1656 California Street,

but it's probably been awhile.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLOSINGS 2017 – BIZNESS APPS (#6 in a series)

Bizness Apps has closed their office located at 1635 California Street. They still have a website, though, so I'm guessing that means the company itself is still in business.

BLOG UPDATE AND CORRECTION: YOUR NAME ABOVE THE TITLE

After I published the "Your Name Above the Title" last week, I received a message from a reader who informed me that: “... he [Zuckerberg] asked that his name not be placed there but the board wanted it to be a source of donations.”

Whether it was the Board of Supervisors or the Facebook board, I think it was bad advice. Putting his name before the city makes it look like he wanted naming rights in return for the money, like AT&T Park.

It's good to know that wasn't the case,

but it still looks he did.

YOUR NAME BEFORE THE TITLE

When you're a big enough movie star in Hollywood, your name comes before the title.

In 21st century San Francisco, with a big enough donation of money,

your name comes before The City.

WHAT'S IN A TECH NAME?

One aspect of the tech makeover/takeover of San Francisco has been the growth of unusual business names.

This one, for example, is too

1263 Mission

by half, while this one

707 Sutter

is clever and eye-catching.

The name on this building makes me wanna

180 Townsend

what?

while this one states the obvious:

So do most people, especially the poor and homeless.

Often, they're some weird combination of nouns, like this:

1735 Polk Street

or this

1019 Market
(The above photograph is from ceylon-amanda.com.)

or this

144 Taylor
(photo from Piano Fight Facebook page, photographer unknown)

This one I like:

1465 Bush

Now that's a cool name.

CONTEMPORARY SIGNS OF DISCONTENT (#25 in a series) – TECH FAIR SHARE TAX RALLY

Last month a Tech Fair Tax rally, complete with police, took place outside the Twitter Building (nobody calls it 1355 Market).

This sign, propped against the wall,

had this interesting bit of information:

That's a pretty good indication of how wealthy San Francisco is compared to the rest of america, where more than 50% of the people (almost 160 million) make less than $30,000 a year.

ADVERTISEMENT FOR THE MONEYED CLASS

MUNI stop, Polk and Van Ness

I saw this ad and wondered: "How does this play to people and families making way less than $100K a year?"

SILVER ATTACHÉ CASES FILLED WITH CASH

In the last week or so I read more than one writer in the local press claim that the current sea-change San Francisco is undergoing is nothing new, that newcomers have always been arriving, and this is just a new generation coming in.

That’s not quite true. While there's always been a new generation coming into the City every 20 years or so, the current influx shift is more than generational – it’s a whole new economic strata or class.
The following quote illustrates what I mean by that:
“Some of the wealthy young people are literally coming down [to buy a cordo or apartment] with bags of cash, and whatever the offer price is, they’re offering $200,000 over – in cash.’

– Cobalt Corazon (click here for full article

Better than bags of cash

is showing up with a silver attaché case neatly stacked with rows of benjamins.

This is no longer a city you move to. This is a city you buy in to.

But that’s the way it is in San Francisco 2015, our Monaco-by-the-Bay, the City of the Future!
