LOSS OF A GREAT MURAL

Earlier, on May 18 of this year I blogged about the incredibly striking mural

created by artist John Vochatzer covering the southern wall of the Mitchell Bros. theater.

It quickly became a favorite of myself and many others.

Then, last week, as the 19 Polk passed the theater, I was thunderstruck to see that the four Hindu goddesses were peeling off.

I have no idea what caused this to happen -- perhaps the recent rains?

In any event, it's a terrible loss. considering all the time and effort that was spent creating it.

CITY MURALS I LIKE – DON'T MIND ME, or NEVER SAY NEVER (#2 in a series)

This mural isn’t in my neighborhood. I first came across it last month. It’s located at the Mission Street end of Washburn Alley between 9th and 10th Streets.

PAINTED FIRE HYDRANTS UPDATE

After I published a blog on October 1 about the painted fire hydrants of Polk Street, the Oct. 8^th issue of the SF Weekly featured a piece about “Cliff”, the man who has been re-painting old, beat-up fire hydrants red and silver around the City. He does this on his own time and dime as a tribute to the fire department. "Cliff" is continuing his city beautification project in our neighborhood at the moment. If you see him, do NOT take his picture or tweet it, as what he is doing is illegal (defacing city property).

NEIGHBORHOOD MURALS (#5 in a series)

This mural, called ‘The Carnaval’,

has been gracing the wall on Frank Norris Alley between Bush and Pine since January 2013. Painted by Bolinas artist Mike Shine, this mural

“…explore[s] the metaphor of a childhood deal with the devil, recalled only through driftwood artifacts that he collects on the beach… Mike gathers this driftwood and slowly pieces together a dark memory….[and] suspects that the clown-devil of his childhood might be waiting to collect on an ancient pact….Mike unfolds the memory of an event that may have foretold his adult life.”

POP-UP MURAL AT LARKIN AND ELLIS

Something good came from the MUNI sick-out last week.

I was walking up Larkin from Market, cursing at MUNI, not in a good mood, when I saw the following mural on a construction wall.

A new restaurant (presumably to be called The Chairman, moving up from food truck to restaurant)

is being built at the southeast corner of Larkin and Ellis in the Tenderloin.

The mural is the work of an artist named Push.

The mural is divided into two halves: a red background and a white background, each with their own visuals and text.

The artwork will not be up long – as soon as the new restaurant is ready to go, the wooden walls will come down, and so will this mural. Check it out should you be on foot in this part of town.
