HEARING ON POLK STREETSCAPE PROJECT NEXT TUESDAY

I first wrote about the proposed parking ban on Polk Street on March 26, 2014. I still like the explanation a friend of mine gave at that time for the repeated attempts to decimate parking on Polk:

‘Do you really think the [san francisco] bike coalition has the money or the clout to ban parking on Polk Street? No way!’ she snorted. ‘They’re just pawns, a means to an end, which is to get rid of parking and drive a lot of local businesses under so high-end shops can move in instead.’

Don't let it happen.

The hearing for final approval of the project is this Tuesday, March 3 at 3:00 p.m. in Room 400 at City Hall.

POLK STREETSCAPE PROJECT/SAVE OUR STREETS

Two posters appeared taped to various streetlights and poles along Polk Street over the weekend.

The first, below, is about the Polk Streetscape Project, a proposal to create a seven block bike-only lane on Polk from Pine Street to Broadway.

The second one, below, signed by many local merchants, is dead set against the proposal .

As you can see, many local residents and businesses have strong feelings about this issue.

A hearing on the proposed changes will take place this Friday, January 30, in Room 416 at City Hall at 10:00 a.m.

It should be a lively affair.

NEIGHBORHOOD DESTRUCTION

Things change fast.

When I last walked by the corner of Clay and Larkin at the beginning of March, the old Methodist church was still standing.

Last week, a friend of mine mentioned that the church had been demolished. And so it has.

In its place will arise the apartment building shown below.

If the picture above is any indication, it looks like more high-end housing for the two-tiered city.

NEIGHBORHOOD MOTHER’S DAY

San Francisco is said to be a city with more dogs than children.

That may be. In my neighborhood, however, many of the new residents are couples with children. So, in honor of Mother’s Day, here are some photographs of neighborhood moms. Some were taken with permission; others weren’t, but all were taken respectfully.

To moms everywhere: may you all raise non-fubar adults.

POLK STREET PARKING MARCH 2014

Below is a sign displayed in many neighborhood businesses right now. 

It’s the latest attempt to restrict parking on Polk Street for bicycle lanes. The fine for those caught parking during the restricted hours would be $500 (!) The poster also asks the following questions:

Considering the amount of money that has flooded into the City and and this part of town during the last two years, I can't discount that explanation.

But back to the mattter at hand. Perhaps some of the 'Why?' questions shown above will be addressed at the SFMTA Open House Meeting tonight. It starts at 5:30 p.m. at Tenderloin Elemantary School located at 627 Turk Street between Polk and Van Ness.
