NEIGHBORHOOD CLOSINGS 2015 (#1 in a series)

After over 10 years of business on the corner of Sacramento and Polk, Sushi Rock has closed.

Whether Rangoon Ruby will open up there remains to be seen – in other words, it ain’t open until it’s open.

NEIGHBORHOOD MAKEOVERS 2015 (#1 in a series)

Work on the Frank Norris Apartments building between Bush and Pine Streets, which began in November 2014, is still ongoing.

Hopefully, when finished, it won’t be like the southern wall, shown below.

Missed a spot.

A remodeling of the the drab, hasn’t-been-painted-in-30+-years apartment building at 1517 Pine Street

has been completed.

I think it came out nice. I don't care for the gray paint job, but it's certainly easier to keep up.

POLK STREETSCAPE PROJECT/SAVE OUR STREETS

Two posters appeared taped to various streetlights and poles along Polk Street over the weekend.

The first, below, is about the Polk Streetscape Project, a proposal to create a seven block bike-only lane on Polk from Pine Street to Broadway.

The second one, below, signed by many local merchants, is dead set against the proposal .

As you can see, many local residents and businesses have strong feelings about this issue.

A hearing on the proposed changes will take place this Friday, January 30, in Room 416 at City Hall at 10:00 a.m.

It should be a lively affair.

NEIGHBORHOOD MURALS (#9 in a series)

Southern side of Sonoma Inn, 1485 Bush Street

One comes upon this great new mural by Zoe Ziegler unexpectedly. Painted on the southern side of the Sonoma Inn on 1485 Bush, it’s mainly only visible on Van Ness Avenue from Sutter to Bush Streets, and only then if one is driving or walking north towards the bay on the western sidewalk of Van Ness.

It’s called ‘The Woman Who Believes in Magic…and Found It.’

Indeed.

NEIGHBORHOOD OPENINGS 2015 -- UNKNOWN ART GALLERY (#2 in a series)

The Unknown Art Gallery (I believe it's called that, but it's hard to say since there's no name above the door) also opened late in 2014. It’s located at 1519 Polk Street, next to Swan's Oyster Depot.

This mural graces the gate of Mandarin Jewelry Wholesalers at 1157 Post Street. I believe it’s called ‘At Peace’. It's also featured on Tumblr:  http://www.tumblr.com/search/street+art+mural+san+francisco
